Spotted
A medium-sized, highly iridescent black starling with no spots on its plumage, a feature that distinguishes it from the closely related Common Starling. It is native to southwestern Europe and North Africa.
Where to spot
Open woodlands, agricultural lands, urban areas, and coastal cliffs in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain, Portugal), northwestern Africa, and some Mediterranean islands.
How to spot
Look for a medium-sized, uniformly glossy black bird, lacking the spots of other starlings. Often seen foraging on the ground in flocks or perched conspicuously.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active during daylight hours, especially visible in early morning and late afternoon in large flocks.

Unlike the Common Starling, which has white spots, the Spotless Starling lives up to its name, presenting a uniformly glossy, purplish-black appearance year-round.
