The Crested Owl is a striking, medium-sized owl found in lowland tropical forests of Central and South America. It is easily recognized by its prominent ear tufts and shaggy crest.

Lowland tropical and subtropical forests from southern Mexico south through Central America to northern Brazil and Bolivia.
How to spot
Listen for its deep, hollow hoot, often repeated. Spotting can be challenging in dense forest; use a powerful spotlight to scan the mid-story and sub-canopy for movement.
When to spot
Nocturnal. Most active and vocal from dusk to midnight. Can be very difficult to spot due to its secretive nature.
