Spotted
The Spectacled Warbler is a small, attractive warbler named for the prominent pale eye-ring or 'spectacles' around its eye, contrasting with a darker face. Males have a grey head, rufous-brown upperparts, and pinkish-orange underparts. Its song is a rapid, rattling trill. It inhabits dry, open scrublands.
Where to spot
Breeds across Southern Europe, Northwest Africa, and the Middle East. Winters mainly in the Sahara and Sahel regions of Africa. Prefers dry, open Mediterranean scrub, garrigue, rocky hillsides, and coastal dunes with low vegetation.
How to spot
Look for its prominent pale eye-ring, which gives it a 'spectacled' appearance. Males have a lovely pinkish wash on the underparts and rufous wings. Listen for its short, fast, and often rather harsh rattling song, frequently delivered from a low perch or during a brief display flight.
When to spot
Most easily observed during the breeding season (March-July) when males are singing. Migrants can be seen during spring (February-March) and autumn (August-October) passage.
