Spotted
The Variable Antshrike is a widespread and common antshrike, notable for its significant plumage variation across its wide range. It inhabits a variety of tropical and subtropical habitats.
Where to spot
Forest edges, secondary growth, open woodlands, plantations, and dense thickets, across much of South America, from Colombia to Argentina.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, accelerating 'tew-tew-tew' or 'chuck-chuck-chuck' call. Scan dense bushes and low trees. Often found in pairs and can be quite conspicuous when calling or foraging.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon. Calls can be heard throughout the day.

The 'variable' nature of its plumage means that different populations can look quite distinct, leading to taxonomic challenges and fascinating regional differences.
