Spotted
The Blue Pitta is a vividly colored, yet remarkably shy bird of the forest undergrowth, known for its iridescent blue plumage, especially prominent in males. It inhabits dense evergreen forests across parts of Southeast Asia.
Where to spot
Dense lowland and montane evergreen forests, often in damp areas with thick undergrowth, across Indochina (e.g., Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia) and parts of China.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic, loud whistling call, which is often the first indication of its presence. Scan the forest floor and low vegetation. Patience and a quiet, motionless approach are crucial for a sighting.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active and vocal during the breeding season (roughly March-August), particularly in the early morning and late afternoon.

Males and females of the Blue Pitta are similar in plumage, which is unusual for a pitta species where sexual dimorphism is often pronounced. Both sexes share the striking blue coloration.
