A wide range of forested habitats, including lowland rainforests, montane forests, bamboo thickets, and even mature gardens, across most of Southeast Asia and parts of South Asia.
How to spot
Listen for its short, distinct 'whip-whip' call. Walk quietly and scan the leaf litter on the forest floor, as they are often foraging there. They can be attracted to areas with good invertebrate populations.
When to spot
Resident year-round in many areas, but some populations are migratory. Active year-round. Best observed during early morning or late afternoon, especially when vocalizing during breeding season.
