Spotted
The Dusky Antbird is a widespread and common medium-sized antbird, characterized by its overall dusky-grey plumage. It is a resident of the dense understory of humid lowland and foothill forests.
Where to spot
Widely distributed from southeastern Mexico through Central America and across much of the Amazon Basin, extending into southeastern Brazil.
How to spot
Look in the dense understory of primary and mature secondary forests. It can be shy, so patience is required. Listen for its distinctive, often accelerating calls, which are a good identifier.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early mornings or near army ant swarms.
This species is often an army-ant follower, but it can also be found foraging independently, moving deliberately through the lower strata of the forest in search of insects.
