The Daurian Redstart is a widespread and well-known species, with males displaying a striking combination of black, white, and bright orange underparts. It is a common visitor to gardens and parks in its range.
Where to spot
Breeds across East Asia, including parts of Russia, Mongolia, China, Korea, and Japan. Winters extensively across Southeast Asia, India, and parts of the Middle East.
How to spot
Look in open woodlands, parks, gardens, cultivated areas, and even urban environments. Males are highly conspicuous with their bright colors and constant tail-flicking. Listen for its short, varied song.
When to spot
Breeding season is spring/summer in northern parts of its range. Migrates south for winter from autumn to spring. Can be observed year-round in different parts of its vast distribution.
