Spotted
The African Blue Flycatcher (*Fraseria caerulescens*) is a widespread and common African flycatcher. Males are striking with glossy blue-black upperparts, while females are duller brown with a bluish wash.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, inhabiting a variety of wooded habitats including open woodlands, savannas with scattered trees, forest edges, and gardens.
How to spot
Look for the male's iridescent blue-black plumage. They often perch on exposed branches and dart out to catch flying insects. Listen for their distinctive, often buzzy or chattering calls.
When to spot
Resident throughout much of its range, active year-round. It is often observed throughout the day, sallying from prominent perches to catch insects.
Its vibrant blue plumage, especially noticeable in the male, makes it one of the more eye-catching flycatchers in its African range.
