Spotted
The Dark Chanting Goshawk is a medium-sized raptor found across a broad band of sub-Saharan Africa, known for its overall grey plumage and distinctive, melodious 'chanting' calls. It is a ground hunter, primarily preying on reptiles, insects, and small mammals.
Where to spot
Dry savannas, thornbush, and semi-deserts across sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal to Somalia and south to northern South Africa.
How to spot
Look for its overall grey plumage, black wingtips, and white-barred belly and thighs. Its bright red legs and cere are also prominent. Listen for its unique, chanting calls, which are a key identifier in its open habitat.
When to spot
Year-round, active during daylight. Often seen perched conspicuously on a tree or pylon, or hunting on the ground.

Its common name comes from its characteristic vocalizations, which are a series of fluty, piping notes often delivered from a prominent perch, especially during the breeding season.
