Spotted
The African Fish Eagle is an iconic and distinctive raptor of sub-Saharan Africa, recognized by its bright white head, chest, and tail contrasting with a chestnut body. Its powerful call is characteristic of African waterways.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa. It is found exclusively near fresh water, including lakes, rivers, large reservoirs, and coastal estuaries.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive call. Look for its striking white head and chestnut body perched on tall trees near water, or soaring gracefully above. Its impressive fishing dives are a spectacle.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often seen perched prominently on a branch overlooking water, or soaring. Most vocal in the early morning and late afternoon. Observable year-round.
The piercing, yelping call of the African Fish Eagle is often described as the 'voice of Africa' and is one of the most evocative sounds associated with African lakes and rivers.
