Spotted
The Forest Buzzard is a medium-sized raptor endemic to the relict patches of Afromontane forest in South Africa. It is a secretive species that primarily hunts within dense forest.
Where to spot
Endemic to South Africa, primarily in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces, inhabiting Afromontane forest patches.
How to spot
Look for its dark brown upperparts, heavily streaked underparts, and pale flight feathers with dark barring. Its preference for dense forest makes it elusive; listening for its typical buzzard call is often the first clue to its presence.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed in the early morning or late afternoon when it might be active near forest edges.

This buzzard was recently elevated to a full species, having previously been considered a subspecies of the Mountain Buzzard (*Buteo oreophilus*). Its conservation status is of concern due to its restricted range and habitat loss.
