Spotted
The Yellow-bellied Wattle-eye is a small, attractive bird of the African forests, notable for its bright yellow belly, black upperparts, and prominent red or yellow eye-wattles.
Where to spot
Found in central Africa, specifically in the Albertine Rift montane forests (e.g., Rwanda, Burundi, DR Congo, Uganda). Inhabits submontane and montane rainforests.
How to spot
Search the mid-story of montane forests. The bright yellow belly and prominent eye-wattles are key identifiers. Listen for their sharp, buzzing, or ticking calls, which often lead to their location.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the day, foraging in the mid-story.
Like other wattle-eyes, this species uses its often brightly colored wattles around the eye for signaling to conspecifics, especially during courtship displays.
