The Mottled Munia, also known as Hunstein's Mannikin, is a striking finch endemic to New Ireland and nearby islands in Papua New Guinea. It is characterized by its heavily mottled black and white underparts.
Where to spot
Endemic to New Ireland, New Hanover, and some adjacent smaller islands in Papua New Guinea, inhabiting grasslands, cultivated areas, and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for the distinctive black and white mottling on its underparts. It can be found foraging on the ground or clinging to grass stalks in open habitats.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round. They are often found in small flocks, feeding on grass seeds.
