The Common Waxbill is one of the most widespread and familiar waxbills in Africa, also introduced to many other parts of the world. It is a small, reddish-brown bird with fine barring and a distinctive red mask and bill.
Where to spot
Native to sub-Saharan Africa. Introduced to many regions globally, including Europe, North and South America, and various islands. Found in grasslands, savannas, agricultural areas, gardens, and reedbeds.
How to spot
Look for it foraging for seeds on the ground or in low vegetation. Its small size, active movements, and bright red facial mask and bill are unmistakable. Listen for its high-pitched, twittering calls.
