Spotted
The Lavender Waxbill is an exquisite small finch native to West and Central Africa. It is celebrated for its soft lavender-grey plumage, accented by a red bill and a dark mask.
Where to spot
Widespread in West and Central Africa, from Senegal to Cameroon. Inhabits dry savannas, grasslands with scattered bushes, and cultivation, often near human settlements.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on grass seeds in open, grassy areas, often in small flocks. Its distinctive lavender color and red bill make it relatively easy to identify.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active during the breeding season when males perform display flights.
These elegant finches are popular in aviculture due to their docile nature and beautiful coloration, but they are also a joy to observe in their natural habitat.
