Spotted
A distinctive tapaculo with a prominent crest and long tail, found in the arid scrublands of South America. Unlike most tapaculos, it is often more visible.
Where to spot
Found in arid and semi-arid scrublands, monte, and chaco habitats of central and northern Argentina, extending into southern Bolivia and western Paraguay.
How to spot
Listen for its unique, often scratchy calls. It can be seen running across open patches or foraging under sparse bushes. Patience is helpful, but it is less secretive than many other tapaculos.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, especially vocal during early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round.
