Spotted
A small, rather plain tapaculo with distinctive pale feet, found in the high Andes of central Peru. It is a secretive resident of humid montane forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the humid montane forests and cloud forests of central Peru, particularly at high elevations in the departments of Pasco and Junín.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic vocalizations. It is extremely shy and difficult to see; focus on detecting it by sound and then waiting patiently near the source in dense cover.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round in its specific high-altitude forest habitat.
The pale coloration of its feet is a subtle but reliable field mark that distinguishes it from other similar-looking tapaculo species in its range.
