The Pale-bellied Woodpecker is a medium-sized species, recognized by its pale, often unbarred, belly and rufous-brown upperparts. It is a resident of dry tropical forests and woodlands.
Where to spot
Found in South America, including Bolivia, Paraguay, and parts of Brazil and Argentina. Inhabits dry Chaco forests, woodlands, and thorny scrub.
How to spot
Look for its pale belly and rufous-brown back. Males have a red patch on the cheek. Listen for its loud, sharp calls and typical drumming, often on dead trees.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, observable year-round. Mornings are often the best time to locate them foraging and vocalizing.
