The Mottled Piculet is a very small woodpecker, characterized by its mottled or speckled pattern on its underparts, which provides excellent camouflage. It is an active bird, often seen hopping along thin branches and vines in search of insects. Its small size makes it easily overlooked.

Inhabits humid tropical montane forests and subtropical forests of southeastern Brazil and northeastern Argentina.
