Rice paddies, freshwater marshes, reedbeds, and cultivated wetlands across Asia, from India to Southeast Asia and parts of China.
How to spot
Easily identified by its uniform cinnamon-brown plumage (males are brighter, females duller). Look for it walking slowly through shallow water or dense vegetation.
When to spot
Year-round. Often seen during daylight hours, especially in the early morning or late afternoon, actively foraging.
