A widespread and relatively common bittern across Asia, known for its rich cinnamon-brown plumage. It is typically found in rice paddies and open wetlands.
Where to spot
Rice paddies, freshwater marshes, reedbeds, and cultivated wetlands across Asia, from India to Southeast Asia and parts of China.
How to spot
Easily identified by its uniform cinnamon-brown plumage (males are brighter, females duller). Look for it walking slowly through shallow water or dense vegetation.
When to spot
Year-round. Often seen during daylight hours, especially in the early morning or late afternoon, actively foraging.
