A secretive, medium-sized heron of Southeast Asia, characterized by its cryptic brown plumage with streaking and a distinctive black crest. It is primarily nocturnal.
Where to spot
Forested wetlands, streams, and increasingly, gardens and urban areas near water across Southeast Asia and parts of China.
How to spot
Look for its brown, streaky plumage and prominent black crest. Often detected by its deep 'hoo-hoo-hoo' call. Remains very still, blending into its surroundings.
When to spot
Primarily nocturnal. Best observed at dusk or dawn, or during the day when flushed from cover.
