Forested wetlands, streams, and increasingly, gardens and urban areas near water across Southeast Asia and parts of China.

Look for its brown, streaky plumage and prominent black crest. Often detected by its deep 'hoo-hoo-hoo' call. Remains very still, blending into its surroundings.

Primarily nocturnal. Best observed at dusk or dawn, or during the day when flushed from cover.
