Spotted
The Olive-sided Emerald (*Chlorostilbon olivaresi*) is a small, vibrant hummingbird species notable for its specific plumage characteristics, especially the subtle olive-tinged sides. It is an active and delightful presence in its native habitats.
Where to spot
Endemic to a specific region in northeastern Venezuela. Found in semi-open habitats, forest edges, and scrubland, often at higher elevations, where it feeds on nectar from various flowering plants.
How to spot
Look for a small, metallic green hummingbird. Males are entirely green with distinctive olive-washed flanks, a straight bill, and a forked tail. Females are duller below, with a pale streak behind the eye. Observe them feeding on flowering plants and listen for their soft, high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Active throughout the year in its resident range. Most readily observed during morning and late afternoon foraging periods when activity peaks.
Like many emerald hummingbirds, the Olive-sided Emerald exhibits brilliant iridescent green plumage, which appears to change color depending on the angle of light, showcasing nature's optical artistry.
