Spotted
The Chinese Sparrowhawk is a small, migratory raptor noted for its pale plumage and distinct flight silhouette. It breeds in East Asia and undertakes long journeys to Southeast Asian wintering grounds.
Where to spot
Breeds in East Asia (China, Korea, Japan) and winters throughout Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Found in woodlands, cultivated areas, and open country.
How to spot
During migration, look for large 'kettles' of soaring raptors. In resident areas, search forest edges, agricultural lands, or open woodlands, and watch for its direct, purposeful flight.
When to spot
Best observed during spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) migration, especially at coastal watchpoints. During daylight hours in all seasons.
This species is famous for its massive migratory movements, with tens of thousands of individuals sometimes seen crossing narrow straits, providing spectacular raptor-watching opportunities.
