Spotted
The Madagascar Serpent Eagle is a large, secretive raptor endemic to the island of Madagascar, and is considered one of the rarest birds of prey in the world. It primarily preys on snakes, lizards, and other reptiles.
Where to spot
Dense, humid evergreen forests of eastern Madagascar. Its elusive nature makes it extremely challenging to find.
How to spot
A large, dark raptor with a long tail and short, rounded wings. Listen for its distinctive, loud calls, which can help in locating it within dense forest. Patiently scan the canopy and forest edges.
When to spot
Year-round, but observations are very rare. Best chance might be during the dry season when forest visibility improves, or during the breeding season when birds are more vocal.
