Where to spot
Breeds in central and northern China, migrating south to Southeast Asia for winter. Found in coniferous and mixed forests, particularly at higher altitudes.
How to spot
Look for active foraging in the mid-canopy of trees. Listen carefully for its distinctive, often high-pitched calls, which are more easily heard than the bird is seen.
When to spot
Breeding season is spring/summer in China; wintering season is autumn/winter in Southeast Asia.
This warbler is known for its high-pitched, often repeated, 'tseep' calls, which are a common sound in the montane forests it inhabits.
