Spotted
A striking leaf warbler recognized by its distinctive head pattern, which includes a pale crown stripe bordered by dark lateral crown stripes. This migratory species breeds across East Asia.
Where to spot
Breeds across East Asia, including parts of Russia, China, Korea, and Japan, in broadleaf and mixed forests. Winters in Southeast Asia, including Indochina and the Malay Peninsula.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive head pattern: a yellowish supercilium, dark eye-stripe, and a pale median crown stripe bordered by dark lateral crown stripes. It also features two prominent wing-bars and bright yellowish-green plumage. Listen for its high-pitched, rather metallic song.
When to spot
Best seen during the breeding season (May-July) when males are vocal. Migration periods (April-May for spring, September-October for autumn) offer opportunities to see them in a wider range of habitats.

Unlike many more subtly marked warblers, the Eastern Crowned Warbler's prominent head markings, including its striking crown stripe, make it one of the more easily identifiable leaf warblers by sight.
