Where to spot
Inhabits the understory of humid lowland forests across the western Amazon basin, from eastern Ecuador to northern Bolivia and western Brazil.
How to spot
Locate army ant swarms and patiently wait. Listen for their distinctive, often ringing or whistled calls. The rufous flanks are a key identification feature.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon, especially when following army ants.
