The Sooty Antbird (Hafferia fortis) is a robustly built antbird with a uniformly dark sooty-black plumage and a dark eye. It is a specialized army-ant follower.
Where to spot
Inhabits the understory of humid foothill and lower montane forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Peru.
How to spot
Locate army ant swarms. This species can be quite bold around ants, often perching openly for brief moments. Listen for its strong, ringing calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon when army ants are foraging.
This species is known for its relatively heavy bill, adapted for handling larger insect prey flushed by army ants.
