Spotted
The Sun Antwren is a tiny, active antwren characterized by its overall dusky plumage and its preference for the understory of humid lowland forests. It is often difficult to see well due to its restless nature.
Where to spot
Western Amazon Basin, found in eastern Ecuador, northeastern Peru, and western Brazil.
How to spot
Focus on the dense understory and vine tangles within primary and mature secondary forests. Listen for its high-pitched, often repeated calls as it gleans insects from foliage.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early morning activity.
This species is named after the Rio Suno in Ecuador, the type locality where it was first formally described, linking it directly to its Amazonian rainforest habitat and the scientific exploration of its region.
