The Red-headed Laughingthrush is a vibrant and active babbler found across the Himalayas and Southeast Asia. It is easily distinguished by its bright reddish-chestnut head and neck, contrasting with its olive-brown body.
Where to spot
Widespread from the Himalayas (northern India, Nepal, Bhutan) eastward through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. Inhabits dense undergrowth of montane evergreen forests, bamboo thickets, and secondary growth.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, varied calls, including chattering, whistling, and bubbling notes. Look for it moving through dense foliage or on the forest floor. The prominent red-chestnut head is an unmistakable identification feature.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Often observed in small to large foraging parties.
