Widespread across the Indian subcontinent, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. Inhabits dry scrubland, open thorny forests, and agricultural areas with dense bushes.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, characteristic chattering calls, often given by the whole group. Look for groups of streaked brown birds foraging on the ground or in low bushes. The streaked appearance and communal behavior are good identifiers.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Easily observed in noisy groups.
