The Cherry-throated Tanager is a critically endangered and extremely rare species, known from a tiny area in Brazil. Males are striking with a black hood, yellow body, and a distinctive cherry-red throat.
Where to spot
Known only from a very specific area within the Atlantic Forest of Espírito Santo state, southeastern Brazil, inhabiting humid montane forests.
How to spot
Observation is exceptionally challenging due to its critically endangered status and tiny range. Access to its habitat is limited and requires specialized expeditions and local guides.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round, but extremely difficult to find due to its rarity and restricted habitat.
This species was thought to be extinct for over 60 years until its rediscovery in 1996, making it one of the most exciting and important avian rediscoveries.
