The Gray-hooded Warbling-Finch is a subtly beautiful tanager identified by its distinctive gray hood. This species thrives in the high-altitude shrublands of the Andes.
Where to spot
Prefers high-elevation montane scrub, polylepis woodlands, and páramo edges in the Andes.
How to spot
Focus on the dense undergrowth and lower to mid-canopy levels. Look for its gray head contrasting with a paler belly and listen for its short, chattering calls.
When to spot
Can be observed throughout the year. Foraging activity is highest in the early morning and before dusk.
Despite its common name's nod to finches, its diet consists mainly of insects, supplemented by berries, a typical tanager foraging strategy.
