Where to spot
Open woodlands, savannas, and thorny scrub across sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal to Somalia and south to South Africa.
How to spot
Look for its large size and uniform dark brown plumage, which gives it a somewhat drab appearance. Its large, pale yellow eyes are noticeable. Often seen perched motionless for long periods, watching for prey in open country.
When to spot
Year-round, active during daylight. Often seen perched on a high vantage point for long periods, scanning for prey, or soaring at moderate heights.
