Spotted
The Brown Quail is a small, ground-dwelling game bird native to grasslands and agricultural areas across Southeast Asia and Australasia. It is highly cryptic, relying on its mottled brown plumage for camouflage amidst dense vegetation.
Where to spot
Found in grasslands, agricultural fields, open woodlands, and heathlands across Southeast Asia, New Guinea, Australia, and Tasmania.
How to spot
Walk slowly through dense grassy areas; they will often flush suddenly from underfoot. Listen for their distinctive, rapidly repeated 'ki-wi-ki' or 'whir-whir-whirr' call.
When to spot
Most active during early morning and late afternoon. Can be flushed throughout the day, especially when walking through suitable habitat.

Brown Quails are known for their rapid, whirring flight when flushed, bursting from cover almost vertically before leveling out, making them quite startling to encounter.
