The Bristle-nosed Barbet is a large, dark barbet with distinctive bristles around its nostrils and a bare, often colorful, facial patch. It is a highly social species inhabiting lowland rainforests.
Where to spot
Humid lowland rainforests and forest edges in West and Central Africa, from Sierra Leone to Angola and central Democratic Republic of Congo.
How to spot
Listen for their characteristic noisy chattering and guttural calls. Look for large, dark barbets in the mid to upper canopy, especially in fruiting trees. They often move quickly in flocks.
When to spot
Year-round; active throughout the day, often easily located by their loud calls.
Bristle-nosed Barbets are often found in noisy flocks, foraging communally for fruits high in the forest canopy.
