Spotted
The Grey-throated Barbet is a medium-sized, somewhat drab African barbet with mostly brown or olive-brown plumage and a distinguishing bare, grey throat patch. It is a social species of humid forests.
Where to spot
Humid lowland and montane forests, forest edges, and clearings across Central Africa, from Cameroon to Uganda and Angola.
How to spot
Listen for their distinctive, often loud, chattering calls. Look for groups of birds in the mid to upper canopy, especially around fruiting trees or large dead snags where they might nest.
When to spot
Year-round; active throughout the day, often seen in small flocks.
Grey-throated Barbets often nest colonially, excavating multiple nesting chambers close together in a single dead tree trunk.
