Spotted
The Puff-throated Babbler is a common and widespread ground-dwelling babbler, easily identified by its streaked throat and prominent whitish supercilium. It's often found in dense undergrowth, more often heard than seen.
Where to spot
Widespread across South and Southeast Asia, including parts of India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Inhabits diverse forest types, dense scrub, and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, explosive, and often repeated 'pom-pom-pom-pom' or 'poh-poh-poh' calls, which are highly diagnostic. Look for its streaked throat and bold eyebrow as it forages on or near the forest floor, often flicking its tail.
When to spot
Resident year-round throughout its extensive range. Most vocal during the breeding season (typically spring/early summer). Early mornings and late afternoons are optimal.
