Lowland and montane forests, woodlands, and sometimes cultivated areas with tall trees across the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and other smaller islands.
How to spot
Look for its striking black upperparts, white underparts with black barring on flanks and thighs, and a prominent black crest. Its white throat is also noticeable, especially when calling or perched.
