Spotted
The Besra is a small to medium-sized raptor, known for its agile and swift flight through dense forest habitats. Its compact build and relatively short, rounded wings are perfectly adapted for maneuvering amongst trees.
Where to spot
Found widely across Asia, from the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka through Southeast Asia to southern China. It prefers various forest types, woodlands, and even well-wooded urban areas.
How to spot
Look for its rapid, direct flight within or along the edges of forests. Listen for its sharp, high-pitched calls. Observing them requires patience due to their secretive nature in dense cover.
When to spot
Most active during daylight hours, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon when hunting. Less conspicuous during midday.
Despite its small size, the Besra is a fierce and effective hunter, specializing in catching small birds and large insects, often ambushing them from hidden perches.
