A charming small wood-dove easily distinguished by the prominent iridescent blue spots on its wings. It is widely distributed across the forests and woodlands of West and Central Africa.
Where to spot
Widespread in West and Central Africa, preferring forests, dense woodlands, riparian thickets, and even gardens. Often found near water.
How to spot
Look for its small size and the distinctive metallic blue spots on its wings. It often forages quietly on the ground but can be found perched in low vegetation. Listen for its soft, plaintive cooing.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, particularly noticeable when foraging on the forest floor during morning and late afternoon. Present year-round.

The brilliant blue spots are structural, meaning their color changes slightly with the angle of light, creating a shimmering effect as the bird moves.
