A striking sunbird, male Blue-headed Sunbirds have a brilliant iridescent blue head and throat, contrasting with dull olive-green upperparts and a yellowish belly. It is an active nectar-feeder of montane forests.
Where to spot
Found in montane forests of the Albertine Rift in Central Africa, including DRC, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi.
How to spot
Look for it visiting flowering trees and shrubs in montane forests. The male's iridescent blue head is a clear diagnostic feature. Listen for its high-pitched, ringing calls.
When to spot
Active year-round, with peak foraging in the morning and late afternoon.
The Blue-headed Sunbird is an Albertine Rift endemic, known for its preference for higher elevations and its reliance on specific montane flowering plants for nectar.
