The Black-winged Ground-Dove is a widespread and common dove of the high Andes, easily identified by the dark, often iridescent, patches on its wings. Its body plumage is typically grey-brown.
Where to spot
Widespread throughout the Andes, from southern Colombia south through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. Inhabits arid and semi-arid high-altitude grasslands, rocky slopes, and puna.
How to spot
Look for the distinct dark wing patches during flight or when perched, which give it its name. It forages on the ground in open, often sparse, vegetation. Its call is a soft, mournful 'coo'.
