Spotted
The Black Pitohui is a medium-sized, entirely black songbird native to New Guinea. It is often found foraging in the understory and mid-story of primary and secondary forests.
Where to spot
Widespread in lowland and lower montane forests across the island of New Guinea.
How to spot
Its entirely glossy black plumage is a key identifier, though juveniles may be duller. Listen for its varied vocalizations, which can include harsh notes, whistles, and churrs, often delivered from dense cover.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during early morning and late afternoon, foraging for insects and fruits.
Like other pitohuis, the Black Pitohui is one of the few known poisonous birds, carrying neurotoxins in its skin and feathers as a defense mechanism against predators.
