Spotted
The Collared Jay is a striking, predominantly blue jay species found in the northern Andes of South America. It is characterized by its bright blue plumage and a distinct black collar or band across its chest. These social birds often move in noisy flocks through humid montane forests.
Where to spot
Found in the northern Andes, ranging from Venezuela through Colombia and Ecuador to northern Peru. It inhabits humid montane cloud forests and evergreen forests, typically at elevations between 1,800-3,000 meters (approx. 5,900-9,800 feet).
How to spot
Look for noisy flocks moving through the mid to upper canopy of montane forests. Its brilliant blue plumage and clear black collar are key identifiers. Listen for its varied, often harsh, and chattering calls.
When to spot
Resident throughout its range, observable year-round. Most active in the early mornings and late afternoons.
