The Malaysian Black Magpie is a stunning, long-tailed bird native to Southeast Asia. Despite its name, it's a member of the crow family (Corvidae) known for its glossy black plumage and vibrant blue eye-ring. It inhabits dense tropical forests, often foraging in the mid-canopy.
Where to spot
Found in Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. It inhabits lowland and hill rainforests, typically in the mid-canopy and sub-canopy layers.
How to spot
Search the mid-levels of dense tropical forests. Look for its glossy black plumage and distinctive bright blue or white eye-ring. Its long, graduated tail is also characteristic. Listen for its varied vocalizations, which include harsh calls and whistles, often given in pairs or small groups.
When to spot
Resident throughout its range, observable year-round. Most active in the early mornings and late afternoons.
