Spotted
The Tepui Tinamou is a reclusive bird endemic to the unique, isolated tepui table mountains of the Guiana Shield. Its habitat is restricted to the montane forests of these ancient formations.
Where to spot
Exclusively found on the slopes and summits of tepuis (table mountains) in southern Venezuela and adjacent parts of northern Brazil. It prefers humid montane cloud forests and dense scrubland.
How to spot
Observing this species is challenging due to its remote and rugged habitat. Focus on listening for its soft, haunting calls echoing through the dense undergrowth of the tepui forests. Be prepared for difficult terrain and unpredictable weather.
When to spot
Similar to other tinamous, it is most vocal during the early morning and late afternoon. Observation requires visiting its specific, often remote, tepui habitat.
This species is named after the 'tepuis,' the ancient flat-topped mountains in South America where it has evolved in isolation, making it a unique inhabitant of these 'lost worlds'.
