Taczanowski's Tinamou (or Ornate Tinamou, Rhynchotus maculicollis) is a species often considered distinct from the Red-winged Tinamou. It is characterized by its heavily barred and spotted plumage, well-suited for its high-altitude habitat.
Where to spot
Found in high-altitude grasslands, rocky slopes, and puna vegetation in the Andes of southern Peru, Bolivia, and northern Chile/Argentina.
How to spot
Best observed by walking slowly through appropriate high-altitude habitats and listening for its calls. Its excellent camouflage makes visual detection difficult until it moves or is flushed.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often foraging in open areas.

The scientific name 'maculicollis' literally means 'spotted neck,' accurately describing its distinctive plumage pattern, which provides excellent camouflage in its Andean environment.
