Where to spot
Montane pine-oak forests, open woodlands, and clearings, often near cliffs or rivers, in southern Mexico and northern Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras).
How to spot
Look for its glossy blue-black back and the unique scaled or speckled pattern on its white belly. Observe its agile flight along mountain slopes or over valleys. Often nests in cliff crevices.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active during daylight hours.
The 'scaled' appearance on its underparts is due to the dark feather bases showing through the white tips, creating a unique and intricate plumage pattern.
